Team Selection Policy
Where possible we aim to keep the same players together from one season to the next. Ideally new players will be placed in a team with their school mates, unless that team already has enough players and another team is short on numbers.

Year 0-1 (“Have-A-Go”)
Pre-schoolers and school new entrants play in the Have-A-Go Grade. They will receive a fun introduction to cricket and learn the basics of batting, bowling and fielding. In the second part of the season, they will play games against each other. The emphasis will be on having a great time with their friends in a relaxed environment.

Year 2 / Year 3
Year 2 and 3 children play a Dual Pitch format game. Dual pitch is where two pitches will be used and both teams bat and bowl at the same time so all kids are involved and there is no down time. This is shorter in time duration but still have the same playing opportunities so that children are active for extended periods of the game. For Year 2, “tipeny” runs will apply i.e. if the batsmen hits the ball they must run. Players bat in pairs, with each pair batting for four overs no matter now many times they are out. Bowlers bowl two overs each, from one end only. (Click here for 2021-22 Cricket Wellington handbook)
Year 4 Softball Cricket
Year 4 soft ball cricket games are 16 overs each side with all overs to be bowled from the same end. Each batting pair will bat in 5 over allotments. If a batter is dismissed the batter changes end and 3 runs is subtracted from the team total. All 8 players will bowl two overs each with run-ups no longer than 10 metres. All overs are 6 ball overs i.e. no extra deliveries for wides and no-balls. (Click here for 2021-22 Cricket Wellington handbook)
Year 5 & 6 Hardball Cricket
Year 5 and 6 Hardball cricket requires protective equipment (box, helmet, pads & gloves) to be worn when batting. Games are 20 overs each side with all bowling to take place from one end only. Each batting pair will bat in 5 over allotments. If a batter is dismissed the batter changes end and 3 runs is subtracted from the team total. Bowlers can bowl a maximum of three overs each with run-ups no longer than 10 metres and all players must bowl at least two overs each. All overs are 6 balls overs with a maximum of 8 balls if extras are required to be bowled. (Click here for 2021-22 Cricket Wellington handbook)
Year 7 & 8
Year 7 and 8 is hard ball cricket, therefore protective equipment (box, helmet, pads & gloves) will be worn when batting. Games are 30 overs per innings in 5 over chunks i.e. 5 overs from one end, then five from the other end etc. Batters must face a minimum of 6 balls before they can be officially dismissed. If a batter is dismissed in their first 6 balls faced the batter will change ends and either 4 runs (Year 7) or 5 runs (Year 8) is subtracted from the team total. Batters must retire one they face 30 balls but can return after all other batters have batted. Bowlers can bowl a maximum of five overs each with a maximum run-up of 15 metres. All overs are 6 balls overs with a maximum of 8 balls if extras are required to be bowled. (Click here for 2021-22 Cricket Wellington handbook)
